Assistive Technology: Supporting Independence at Every Stage
Assistive Technology at Kids+
The right piece of equipment can open up a world of possibilities for a child; the ability to move independently, communicate, play, and take part in everyday life on their own terms. At Kids+, we believe every child and young person deserves access to the tools that help them do exactly that.
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology (AT) refers to any device, tool, software, or equipment that supports a person with disability to increase, maintain, or improve their functional capabilities. It spans a broad range, from simple, low-tech solutions right through to complex, high-tech devices, and is designed to promote independence, accessibility, and inclusion across home, school, and community settings.
Our Approach
At Kids+, our approach is evidence-based, child-centred, and goal-oriented. We take the time to understand each child's unique needs, goals, and the environments they live, play, and learn in, we then work through a thorough process of assessment, trialling, prescription, and ongoing review to ensure the equipment continues to meet their needs as they grow.
We are an NDIS registered provider with strong expertise in assistive technology applications and funding support letters, and we work closely with suppliers and funding bodies to make access as smooth as possible for families.
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology (AT) refers to any device, tool, software, or equipment used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. These technologies are designed to assist in performing tasks that may be challenging due to additional physical, sensory, cognitive, or communication requirements.
AT can range from simple, low-tech solutions to complex, high-tech devices, and it aims to promote independence, accessibility, and inclusion for people with disabilities. Examples of AT include, wheelchairs, AAC devices, toileting supports and bicycles.
What we do
Our experienced team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech pathologists work collaboratively with children, families, and support networks to assess, recommend, and prescribe the right equipment for each individual child. We specialise in a wide range of assistive technology, including mobility aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, and gait trainers, postural supports including seating systems and standing frames, daily living equipment for sleeping, bathing, toileting, and feeding, communication devices and AAC systems, and recreational equipment such as bikes, trikes, and frame runners.
Our Process
Understanding Needs
We begin by getting to know the young person, their goals, and the environments they live, play, and learn in.
Assessment & Trial
We collaborate to research and trial equipment and technology options in real life settings whenever possible.
Prescription & Customisation
Our clinicians provide detailed prescriptions to ensure safe and effective use, liaising with suppliers and funders as needed.
Training & Support
We provide education and ongoing support for families, schools, and carers to help each young person use their technology with confidence.
Review
We regularly review equipment to ensure it continues to meet you and/or your child’s changing needs as they grow and develop.
Working Together
Assistive Technology is not just about equipment, it’s about participation, independence, and finding the best ways for every young person to do what they love.
Kids+ is an NDIS registered provider and a leader in paediatric therapy innovation. We are proud to partner with families, funding bodies, and equipment suppliers to ensure timely, safe, and effective access to the technology that makes a difference.
