About Changemakers
Changemakers challenge perceptions, open minds, and create positive social change for our communities, our country, and our world.
The Changemakers Conference is Kids+’ biennial conference that brings together people within the disability community, and beyond, to spark and drive social change. This is a unique conference that dives deep into important topics with keynote presentations and interactive 45-minute workshops, bringing together insights, experience and innovation from service leaders, community practitioners and those with lived experience. Changemakers 2025 is ideally suited for those passionate about improving the lives and opportunities for infants, children, young people, and their families who experience disability.
Kids+ is pleased to invite and welcome you to the 3rd Kids+ Changemakers Conference hosted in Torquay, traditional lands of the Wadawurrung people, 4-5 September 2025.
Breaking The Mould
Changemakers play a pivotal role in challenging traditional norms and embracing new ways of thinking and innovative approaches to social issues. Changemakers 2025 aims to create a vibrant platform for collaboration, learning, and empowerment, encouraging participants to break free from conventional constraints and embrace new ways of thinking and acting.
Our purpose is to equip attendees with the knowledge, tools, and connections needed to break the mould to become effective advocates for change.
Join us in breaking the mould, celebrating diversity, and inspiring the next generation of changemakers. Together, we can create a future where the aspirations and ambitions of people with disabilities are at the forefront service delivery design and delivery.

Bernie Shakeshaft
Keynote Speaker
Founder of BackTrack, Australian of The Year Local Hero 2020.
Bernie Shakeshaft is the Founder and Director of BackTrack. With 30 odd years of youth work experience, he believes that young people are the most accurate barometer of how we are faring as a nation. In the early days of his career, Bernie saw kids dropping out of school, getting into trouble and falling through the cracks of a system that couldn't meet their complex needs. This inspired him to start BackTrack in 2006, with just a shed, a passionate crew of volunteers and a mission to keep kids alive, out of jail and chasing their hopes and dreams.
BackTrack has gained national recognition by offering vulnerable young people the holistic, flexible and long-term support they need to get their lives back on track, through a combination of educational, training and diversionary activities, transitional employment through the social enterprise BackTrack Works, accommodation and youth work. A BackTrack Network now supports other communities to develop similar programs across the country.
Bernie was named Australian of the Year Local Hero (2020), National Rural Health Alliance Unsung Hero (2019), and has received the Spera Australian Rural Education Award (2018), the Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award (2017), a Churchill Fellowship (2014) and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of New England (2020). He and BackTrack were the subject of the award-winning documentary 'Backtrack Boys' and the biography 'Back on Track'.
