Physiotherapy for Every Age: Supporting Babies, Children and Young Adults with Disabilities
When people think about physiotherapy, it's easy to picture just one age group, but needs, goals and milestones look completely different depending on where someone is in their life. At Kids+, our physiotherapists work with babies, children and young adults with disability, tailoring every session to the stage they're at and the goals that matter most to them and their family.
Here's what physiotherapy for children with disability actually looks like across each life stage, and how it can help, whatever age your child or young person is.
Babies and infants: building the foundations
The first two years of life can include physical developments like rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling to stand, and first steps, but this is not the case for every child. For babies with developmental delay, these milestones don't always happen on the ‘typical’ timeline. This is when Kids+ can support your child and family.
Early paediatric physiotherapy focuses on supporting strength, movement patterns and motor planning from the very start. Your physiotherapist might work on things like:
Muscle tone and positioning support
Early mobility and balance
Tummy time tolerance and head control
Early intervention strategies parents and carers can use every day at home
Starting physio early means giving babies the best possible foundation to build on while also giving parents confidence and practical tools along the way. This stage works hand-in-hand with our Parent Infant Program,, which supports both baby and caregiver together.
Children: strength, coordination and confidence in everyday life
As children grow, physiotherapy shifts toward the gross motor skills that shape everyday participation. Therapy at this stage can help with:
Setting and working toward meaningful, child-led goals
Balance, coordination and strength for play and sport
Walking patterns, mobility aids, or orthotic needs
Confidence in group activities, PE class and playground settings
This is also the age where physiotherapy starts to blend with independence and social participation and why our team sets goals collaboratively with each child and family.
Young adults: a stage that often gets overlooked
Physiotherapy continues to matter for mobility, independence and quality of life beyond the school years. For young adults with disabilities, physiotherapy might focus on:
Maintaining or improving mobility and strength into adulthood
Supporting independence in daily tasks and community participation
Managing changes in mobility needs as bodies and circumstances change
Transition support as young people move from paediatric to adult-oriented services and routines
At Kids+, we recognise that this stage deserves its own dedicated support, and we work with the young adult to support them in living the life they want to live.
How NDIS funding works for physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is a common inclusion in NDIS plans, typically funded under Improved Daily Living or Capacity Building supports, depending on individual goals. In practice, this means:
Families and participants can often self-refer directly to Kids+, meaning a third-party referral usually isn't required
Funding can support ongoing sessions, assessments, and equipment-related recommendations
Support can be tailored to goals at any age, from a baby's first motor milestones through to a young adult's independence goals
If you're unsure whether your child's NDIS plan covers physiotherapy, our team can help you figure that out as part of getting started. Please email us at info@kidsplus.org.au or call 03 5223 1475.
