Inclusive Sport in Action: Kids Plus at the Geelong Running Festival All Abilities Mile
On Saturday 19 September, the Kids Plus team had an amazing morning at the Geelong Running Festival's All Abilities Mile, an event built so children and young people of all abilities can take part. Inclusive sport is something we care deeply about, and it sits at the heart of our sports and recreation programs in Geelong.
Supporting All Abilities: The 1 Mile Challenge
Kids Plus partnered with the event for the All Abilities 1 Mile, which set off with a bang at 9am from Steampacket Gardens. Participants made their way along the Geelong waterfront, crossing the finish line alongside the water. What a buzz to see all those proud, smiling faces!
Before the event, our group spent valuable time with Paralympic gold medallist Rich Colman, who kindly donated his time and expertise to ensure everyone was ready for the challenge. What we hadn't prepared for was the incredible atmosphere and cheers that accompanied us from Go to Woah. What a truly special experience.
A Showcase of Inclusivity
The All-Abilities event at the running festival was a great display of inclusivity in our community, and how sporting events can include people with disabilities right from the start, from inception and planning, rather than an afterthought. This kind of representation is vital for fostering a supportive environment for everyone.
Sport Is for Everyone
Watch our Instagram reel from the All Abilities Mile to understand just what inclusion like this means to our community, because sport is for everyone!
If the day has inspired your child or young adult to get moving, our sports and recreation programs offer supportive, inclusive ways to try new activities, build skills and connect with others.
